One anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) Service with Dr. Yussra Yusoff

The One anastomosis Gastric Bypass (OAGB) is a popular and effective bariatric surgery designed to help individuals with obesity achieve significant weight loss, especially when other methods such as diet, exercise, and medication have not been successful. OAGB combines both restrictive and malabsorptive techniques, making it one of the most effective surgical options for long-term weight loss and improvement in obesity-related health conditions.

The OAGB procedure involves creating a small stomach pouch by dividing the stomach vertically. This reduces the amount of food you can eat at one time, helping you feel full sooner. The surgeon then connects this pouch to a lower part of the small intestine, bypassing a portion of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). This bypass reduces the absorption of calories and nutrients, leading to significant weight loss.

Patients who undergo OAGB can expect to lose 65-80% of their excess weight within the first 12 to 18 months post-surgery. OAGB is particularly effective in reversing metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Many patients experience improvements or complete remission of these conditions, often before significant weight loss occurs.

OAGB  is a major surgery, and recovery involves a commitment to lifelong dietary changes and nutritional supplementation. Due to the reduced absorption of nutrients, patients must take vitamin and mineral supplements daily to prevent deficiencies. Common supplements include multivitamins, calcium, vitamin D, iron, and vitamin B12. Patients will need to follow a specific post-operative diet, starting with liquids and gradually progressing to solid foods. Eating smaller, more frequent meals is crucial, as is avoiding high-sugar and high-fat foods to prevent dumping syndrome—a condition where food moves too quickly through the small intestine, causing nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness.

As with any surgery, OAGB carries risks, including infection, bleeding, and complications from anesthesia. Specific to MGB, there is a risk of nutrient deficiencies, bile reflux, and the possibility of needing further surgery to correct complications. OAGB offers a powerful tool for weight loss and improving health, but it requires dedication and careful management to achieve and maintain the best results.
